How to Cut the Wedding Cake

The official Wedding cake cutting is one of the most important parts of the reception, and is steeped in tradition. So it should be no surprise that there is a correct way to cut the cake.

If you have a large or elaborate cake, place it on its own round, skirted table. The cake should be cut just before dessert, preceded by an announcement by the master of ceremonies. For an afternoon tea or cocktail reception, serve the cake after the receiving line and once guests have their drinks.

As you approach the cake, the groom places his right hand over the bride’s and together you cut the first slice from the bottom layer. Slide the slice onto the server, place it on a plate, and use the knife to cut the slice into two small pieces. The groom feeds the bride her first bite and the bride then feeds him. This tradition signifies your commitment to provide for one another. As a thoughtful gesture, the bride may then offer a piece of cake to her new in-laws and the groom should do the same.

Once the bride and groom have done their ceremonial cutting, the catering staff will take the cake to the back to slice and serve the rest to the guests. For a first-anniversary treat, freeze the top layer or have your baker make you a fresh layer later.
